Professional Crane Tree Removal in Central New Jersey

Some trees cannot be climbed or dropped safely with conventional methods — and attempting to do so puts your property and crew at risk. Dead trees with brittle wood, trees hollowed by internal decay, trees surrounded by structures on all four sides, and trees with zero viable rigging options all require crane-assisted removal. Based in Millstone Township, Pro-Stump Tree Service partners with licensed crane operators to lift entire tree sections vertically out of tight spaces and swing them to a safe landing zone in your driveway or street.

Our 40-ton crane reaches 120 feet horizontally with a 6,000-pound lift capacity at maximum radius — enough to clear most residential backyards from a street-side setup. Crane removal is faster, safer, and often less expensive than multi-day rigging jobs because it reduces total labor hours by 60% to 70% on complex trees.

Safety & Insurance

Crane operations follow OSHA crane safety standards. The crane operator holds a NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) certification. All lift plans are reviewed by the operator and our arborist before work begins. No personnel are permitted under a suspended load.

When You Need a Crane

When a Crane Is Safer and Cheaper Than Conventional Removal

Homeowners often assume crane removal is the most expensive option — but for complex trees, it's frequently the opposite. Consider a 70-foot dead oak with a 36-inch trunk, surrounded by a house on one side, a pool on another, a fence on the third, and a neighbor's garage on the fourth. Conventional rigging on that tree requires 2 to 3 days of labor: a climber ascending a dead tree (inherently dangerous because dead wood can snap without warning), setting dozens of rigging points, lowering each piece on ropes, and repositioning the chipper multiple times.

With a crane, the same tree comes down in 4 to 6 hours: the crane lifts each pre-cut section vertically — straight up and over the house — and sets it in the street for processing. The crane day rate ($1,500 to $3,000) is offset by 60% to 70% less labor, and the reduced time on a dangerous tree dramatically improves safety.

Three companies said our backyard oak was impossible without damaging the pool. Pro-Stump Tree Service brought a crane and lifted it out in sections. Not a scratch.

On Your Street

How Crane Removal Works on a Residential Street

The crane sets up on the street or driveway — it never enters your backyard. Steel plates or plywood mats are placed under the outriggers to distribute the 40-ton crane's load and protect your driveway surface. If the crane must occupy a public road, we obtain a municipal road-closure permit and arrange traffic control in advance.

Once the crane is positioned and stabilized, our climber ascends the tree and attaches choker slings to the top section. The climber makes a pre-cut, radios the crane operator, and the operator lifts the section vertically — straight up, clear of the house and all obstructions — then swings it to the landing zone. Working from top to bottom, 10 to 20 lifts remove the entire tree.

Each section is processed (chipped or bucked into firewood) in the landing zone as it arrives. After the last lift, we grind the stump and clean the site. Most crane removals — from setup to final cleanup — are completed in a single day.

The Results

What You Get With Pro-Stump Tree Service Crane Tree Removal

01

120-Foot Reach Over Houses and Obstacles

The crane stays on the street and reaches over your house into the backyard. No equipment needs to enter your yard or damage landscaping.

02

Dead Trees Removed Without Climbing Risk

Dead wood is unpredictable — branches snap, trunks crack. The crane lifts sections without requiring a climber to put full weight on compromised wood.

03

60–70% Faster Than Multi-Day Rigging

A tree that takes 2 to 3 days to rig conventionally comes down in 4 to 6 hours with a crane. Less time on your property, less disruption.

04

Often Less Expensive Than You Think

The crane day rate is offset by dramatically reduced labor hours. Complex trees that quote $8,000 with rigging often cost $5,000 to $6,000 with a crane.

05

Zero Drop Zone Required

Every piece goes straight up. No need for a drop zone in your yard, no risk to pools, patios, fences, or gardens below.

06

Driveway Protection with Steel Plates

Outrigger pads distribute the crane's weight. A 40-ton crane exerts roughly 15 PSI on its pads — less than a loaded dump truck. Damage is rare and repaired at our expense.

Step by Step

How We Handle Crane Tree Removal

1

Crane Assessment

We evaluate the tree's weight, height, and lean, then determine crane positioning, lift capacity needed, and access requirements for the street or driveway.

2

Permits & Road Closure

If the crane must set up on a public road, we obtain a municipal road-closure permit and arrange traffic control. Most residential jobs position the crane in the driveway.

3

Rigging & Lift Plan

Climber attaches choker slings to tree sections starting at the top. Each piece is pre-cut, then lifted vertically by the crane and swung to the landing zone.

4

Sectional Removal

Working from top to bottom, 10 to 20 lifts remove the entire tree. Each section is processed (chipped or bucked) in the landing zone as it arrives.

5

Stump Grinding & Cleanup

After the crane demobilizes, we grind the stump and clean the site. Most crane removals — from setup to cleanup — are completed in a single day.
